Creating PDFs
Technical guidelines
The Department of Natural Resources and Mines 'PDF guidelines for web content providers' has been reproduced on the Web Centre (some parts have been adapted to comply with the PDF publishing principles and references to the specific internal resources have been removed).
It is recommended that these instructions are followed to assist in making well-optimised, web ready PDFs from source files and to assist with implementing the PDF publishing principles.
Introduction to PDF files
Acrobat PDF files are platform independent - that is, they are designed to look the same regardless of operating system, application, or distribution medium. To read a document published on the web in a proprietary format (such as Microsoft Word) the user must have that software installed on their computer. To read PDF files on the web, users require only a web browser and the free Adobe Acrobat Reader software. Acrobat Reader is freely available for the operating systems of most computers, including hand-held devices. The latest version can be downloaded from the Adobe Downloads page.
Distiller 'joboptions' files
Joboption (or automatic configuration) files for Acrobat 4 and 5 are available for download, or see 'Distiller setup' to configure manually.
